Yalikavak is packed full of traditional charm yet lies only a 20 minute drive away from the centre of Bodrum town. Local life here is centred on the harbour, where you'll find impressive yachts moored up alongside simple fishing boats laden down with their latest catch. Of course there are also plenty of local restaurants specialising in fish and seafood dishes lined up by the harbour, as well as a great selection of Turkish dishes to choose from. Other local attractions include an interesting little art gallery showing the work of various local artists, plus there's a weekly market selling fresh produce and fashion. You'll find the beach a particularly picturesque place to be when the sun goes down, as this area is known for having really spectacular sunsets. Once the sun has disappeared below the horizon there are a couple bars you can visit but don't expect a thriving nightlife.

Description of the Town and Local Activities

The small town of Yalikavak is becoming ever more popular as an alternative resort to Bodrum. Yalikavak still supports a thriving fishing industry, and the harbour has a wide range of restaurants that serve fish caught fresh on the day. Every week the town hosts one of the biggest fruit, vegetable and clothing markets on the Bodrum Peninsula and there are many shops in the traffic free centre. Situated approximately 30 minutes from Bodrum Airport Yalikavak allows easy access to the surrounding area via the network of the local Dolmus (mini-bus) service.

As you approach Yalikavak, over the spine of the hill, where you find a row of windmills, there is a breathtaking view of the whole area including the bays of Tilkicik, Pasa and Agacbasi - and the lower deep green bay of Yalikavak itself. The name Yalikavak means poplars by the sea but the abundance of trees are actually not poplars, but plane trees. However, the do attest to the fact Yalikavak does have a very good supply of fresh water, hence the greenness. Combining traditional charm with modern hotel comforts, Yalikavak is the favourite choice of many discerning visitors. The small shops in the traffic free town centre have benefited from sensitive restoration and conversion, and many interesting and unusual souvenirs can be found. A former water cistern has been converted into a small art gallery which exhibits the works of both local and well known artists.
